Wu Kejing
Wu Kejing was born in Fufeng County, Shaanxi Province in December 1954. He graduated from the Department of Chinese Studies at Northwestern University and has a master’s degree in literature. He is currently a writer at Northwest University, a vice chairman of the Shaanxi Writers Association, and chairman of the Xi’an Writers Association. His notable works include the novellas Blue Flowers on Handcuffs, Legend of the Sheep, and the novel First Marriage. He has won the Bing Xin Prose Award, Liu Qing Literature Award and other awards. In 2010, the novella Blue Flowers on Handcuffs won the fifth Lu Xun Literature Prize. Four of his works: Shyness, Big Ugly, Shake Hands, and Movie on Horseback, have been adapted into films. Among them, Shyness won the Best Photography Award at the USA Syracuse International Film Festival. The novella Blood Sun was published by British Canyons Press, and another five essays were included in a collection of Chinese literary works edited in South Korea.
Wu Kejing loves his hometown. In all of his literary practice, everything unavoidable is laid out in his hometown. His hometown is outlying on the Loess Plateau, which is the 800-mile Qinchuan in the geographical sense. This is the cultural homeland that gave birth to the two major ancient states of Zhou and Qin. Wu Kejing and his hometown, his elders and fellow villagers there, all share joy and sorrow, and cry together. Wu Kejing thinks that only warm and emotional things can be remembered by time. This is the literary principle he follows.
Blue Flowers on Handcuffs talks of the reason why female protagonist Yan Xiaoyang receives a suspended death sentence for a crime and the beauty of humanity that is displayed on her being taken to Xi’an Provincial Capital Prison. The words written for the acceptance of the Lu Xun literary award were written thusly: A freely sung song, two old and new “blue flowers.” Deep regional culture, a strong northern Shaanxi style, fantastic story structure, and cold critical spirit constitute the unique artistic charm of Blue Flowers on Handcuffs. A Northern Shaanxi girl’s meeting with various things in life, persistent pursuits in life and natural and noble human nature like the folk songs on the yellow earth, are touching and moving. The First Marriage is a story about a novel written against the background of a village named Guguapo Village on the edge of the Wei River. This is a story about issues pertaining to “rural villages, agriculture, and farmers.” The author describes three new brides and three families, as well as family members’ behaviors and the ups and downs of their lives, trying to write a panorama of the realities of real rural life, reflecting the development of China’s rural areas at the beginning of Reform and Opening Up.
The First Marriage has been adapted into a TV series and will be broadcast on CCTV. Legend of the Sheep has enriched and expanded people’s unique understanding and sentiment towards the their native China. The novel shows the process of helpless struggle and disillusionment of semi-disabled person Feng Laicai, displaying readers with the difficult living conditions of farmers in the mountains. Wu Kejing accurately intertwines the joys, pains, ideals, and losses in the conflicting spirits of farmers during dramatic transformative changes, and shows the complex spiritual situation of farmers in the wave of social change.
The novel Fengqi Town, which has just been finished, is a novel that converses with time. In this book, Wu Kejing profoundly explores the attitudes towards time and asks the questions: As we live in time, do we respect it? The author believes that we must not spoil our time. We should “grab the hands of time and become friends with it.” This is the path that a literary worker should choose.
